Reyon Pharmaceutical announced on the 19th that it has signed a contract manufacturing agreement with SN Bioscience for the production of finished drug products of a GLP-1 (semaglutide)-based obesity treatment.
Under this agreement, Reyon Pharmaceutical's Chungju plant will undertake the entire manufacturing process for SN Bioscience's semaglutide-based obesity treatment injection, ranging from final bulk drug substance formulation and filling to finished product packaging. The facility will initially prioritize the production of clinical trial samples for overseas studies until 2027, with large-scale commercial production projected to commence in 2028.
According to IQVIA, a global pharmaceutical market research firm, the anti-obesity drug market is growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 24% to 27% and is reported to reach $50.1 billion (approximately 68 trillion KRW) by 2028.
After obtaining GMP certification for finished drug products in August 2023, Reyon Pharmaceutical's Chungju plant has been advancing through regulatory approval processes for commercial product manufacturing with various domestic and international clients, officially entering full-scale commercial operations. An official from Reyon Pharmaceutical stated, "The commercial production of an obesity treatment, which currently represents the fastest-growing segment in the global pharmaceutical market, is expected to significantly contribute to the revenue growth of our Chungju plant."
Meanwhile, SN Bioscience is a biotech company developing oncology treatments and anti-obesity drugs. In December of last year, its nanoparticle novel anticancer drug, 'SNB-101,' received Phase 2 clinical trial approval from the U.S. FDA. Notably, the small cell lung cancer (SCLC) treatment it is developing has been granted Fast Track designation (along with Orphan Drug Designation), paving the way for potential commercialization immediately following the Phase 2 clinical trial.
